Mechano Growth Factor (MGF) is a synthetic peptide that is also naturally made from alternative splicing of the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) protein. It contains 24 amino acids and has a molecular mass of just over 2,866 g/mol. Also known as the MGF-24aa-E peptide, this protein is the product of alternative splicing of the IGF-1 gene with a 49 base pair (bp) insert in humans, which shifts the reading frame to create a distinct isoform known as IGF-1Ec.1 It is also present in rodent models with an additional 52 bp insert, known as IGF-1Eb.1 These splice variants of IGF-1 were originally found to play a role in skeletal muscle proliferation and maturation. MGF is produced in response to mechanical stress, hence its name “mechano” growth factor. Studies show that MGF triggers muscle stems cells (known as satellite cells) to help repair and rebuild muscle tissue after stretching or injury.2 MGF has also been implicated in heart muscle repair after ischemia due to myocardial infarction. In vitro studies demonstrate that MGF may have potential therapeutic actions in repairing damaged heart tissue because they act on mesenchymal bone marrow cells. These cells are thought to be a source of autologous stem cells that may be transplanted into the heart after ischemic events.3 Additionally, other studies show that MGF plays a role in the development and function of the brain. In cases of hypoxia and ischemia, MGF (IGF-1Ec) is produced and may have neuroprotective effects.4,5 One study found that MGF expression preserved motor neuron function in a model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).6

Mechano growth factor is the MGF-22aa-E peptide and comes in a concentration of 2 mg/vial.
